(Katie comes in the door. Dave is in the living room reading the newspaper.)
Kate: What a beautiful day ! The sky is blue . The sun is bright . I just love summer .

Dave: Not me. Summer is too hot.

    Kate: I love hot weather.

Dave: I love a nice, air-conditioned living room in hot weather.

Kate: How can you stay inside on such a nice day?

Dave: Easy. It's too hot outside.

    (Jessie comes in.)

Jessie: It's hot outside. But someone still needs to cut the grass.

Dave: Katie can. She loves hot weather.

Katie: He's right. Sure, I'll be glad to do it.

Jessie: Thank you .You can do it this weekend.

Katie: I think I'll do it right now.
         The weather is so nice.

Jessie: Yes. This is perfect weather for a barbecue.
    Katie: What a great idea!

    Dave: What's a great idea?

Katie: Having a barbecue. We can invite some friends over and have a party.

Jessie: That sounds like fun. But we'll have to clean up the backyard.

Katie: No problem. I'll start by cutting the grass in the backyard.

Jessie: Good. If we're going to have a barbecue, there's a lot to plan.

Katie: That's fine. I'll help you plan. I love planning parties!

    My favorite thing

My favorite thing is a doll of Harry Potter. It is very lovely.
The doll has jet-black(墨黑的) hair, however, its hair looks stubbornly untidy(凌乱的), like Harry Potter himself! It wears round glasses hold together with a lot of tape. The eyes behind its broken glasses were bright green. And on its forehead(前额), clearly visible(可见的) through is hair, is a thin scar(伤痕), shaped like a bolt of lightning.
My uncle bought it to me on my birthday. I’m so surprised and excited. I really want to have a doll of Harry Potter! So I think that was the best birthday gift I have received.
Do you know why I like this doll best? Because I’m Harry Potter’s fans(谜). I’m crazy about this doll. And it is very lovely. It looks like Harry Potter very much. I really like it.

Li: There's going to be an exhibition of volleyball match and some gymnastics this evening. Would you like to go ?

Mary:Yes, I'd love to. Who are the contestants?

Li: In the volley-ball there will be matches between Beijing and Tianjian.

    Mary:Wonderfully! I love sports.

Ms Pi: What sport do you go in for(参加), Tony?
Tony: I’d say it is baseball(棒球). In the U.S., baseball is loved by many. In fact, it’s long been called “the national ball(国球).”
Ms Pi: In China, it’s not very popular. How many members are there in one team?
Tony: A regulation baseball game consists of two opposing teams of nine members each.(正规的棒球比赛由两个队组成,每队9人) Well, what sport do you go in for?
Ms Pi: I’m absolutely mad(绝对迷恋) about tennis. But you may be surprised to hear I used to play in a women’s football team.
Tony: I think soccer’s much too tough(难) a game for women to play. But Chinese women’s soccer team is terrific(顶呱呱)! Do many women play it in China?
Ms Pi: I’d have to admit it’s not as widespread(普及) and popular as in Europe.
Tony: That’s the case in my country, too. Ms Pi, what would you say are the most popular sports in your country?
Ms Pi: Well, there can be no doubt(无疑) that table tennis and football are at the top of the list.

(Miss Hu, the secretary of Mr. Green, is inviting their client Mr. Smith to have a dinner with
    them. )
(A: Miss Hu; B: Mr Smith)

A: Do you have anything special to do this evening, Mr. Smith?

    B: Nothing special.

A: Why not go to dinner with us?

    B: Don't trouble, Miss Hu?

A: No trouble at all. It's our pleasure.

    B: Thank you.

    * * * *

A: Do you care for seafood?

    B: That's my favorite.

A: Good. It seems we have come to the right place. In this restaurant you can have crabs, prawns, fish, shellfish and the like. They are fresh from the sea.

B: Are they delivered by air?

    A: Certainly.

    B: That's fine.

    A: Here we are.

    Americans are very strange

Americans are very strange: they can’t rest. They have the most holidays and vacations in the world, but they can’t rest. They rush up and down in their country, just as tourists; they go into the outside; they keep the hotels full. But they can’t rest. The beautiful views go past them. They learn it, but they don’t see it. Battles(战争) and monuments(纪念碑) are told to them in a rubberneck bus(观光车、游览车). They hear them, but they don’t get them. They never stop moving; they rush up and down. Americans are very strange: they can’t read. They have more and better schools. They spend more money on schools and colleges than all Europe(欧洲). But they can’t read. They print much more books than the French in a year, but they can’t read. They have so many Sunday newspapers every week, but they don’t read them. They’re too busy. They use them for fires. They buy thousands of new novels, but they read only page one. Their streets are full of(充满 ) large signs. They won’t look at them. Their street cars are filled with(使……充满) advertising, but they never see them.
        These are Americans!
