    Applying for a free e-mail account(账目)

Emma: Kevin, they say the easiest and cheapest way to communicate with others is over a network. Is it so?

    Kevin: Absolutely right.

Emma: But I was told we must set up an email system on the network first.

Kevin: Yes. You need some hardware and software.

    Emma: What hardware?

Kevin: A computer and a phone line.

Emma: Do I need an account for my email?

Kevin: No necessary in fact. You can get a free email account.

Emma: Free? That's good. What software do I need then?

Kevin: What operating system are you using on your computer?

Emma: Windows 98, the second version.

Kevin: Then you don't need any additional software. The Internet Explorer bound with Windows 98 can help you get access to your email to send and receive emails.

Emma: Terrific. I'll apply for a free email account right away.

It was Saturday. Saturday was shopping day in my family. My mother saw an ad about a sale at the mall. The biggest department store was having an anniversary sale, and everything was half price. My mother decided I needed new clothes. I was in big trouble. I liked my clothes. They fit me, and they looked great. But my mother loves shopping, and she loves sales. There was no stopping her.

For a minute I thought I was lucky. Dad had the car. How could we get there? But Morn said,“We can take the bus!”

The bus stopped at Sixth Avenue, just one block from the mall. At the mall, my mother asked for directions to the big department store. A man said the store was across from the pet store. We went past my favorite stores-Guitar World, Music Corner, and Sneaker Stop. I wanted a new CD. But my mother said not to look in the window. We had to turn right and go past the luggage store. It was next to the jewelry store.

    MARK TWAIN

Mark Twain was a great American writer, and he was also a famous speaker. He liked to tell funny stories to make people laugh. He also liked to play jokes on his friends.

Once Mark Twain was traveling with a friend of his. His friend lost money, so he asked Mark Twain to buy a train ticket for him.

“But I don’t have enough money to buy two tickets,” said Mark Twain. His friend didn’t know what to do.

“You can hide(躲藏)under my seat when the conductor comers to check the tickets,” Mark Twain said to him.

When the conductor came to check the tickets, Mark Twain gave him two tickets, one for himself and one for his friend. He said to the conductor, “My friend is a strange man. When we travel on a train, he does not like to sit on the seat. He likes to lie on the floor under the seat.” Everyone in the train looked at his friend under the seat and laughed.

For a long time, I always carried a cup of milk to bed with me. Before I got into bed, I always drank half. Milk helps me sleep very well and I don’t usually wake up. Well I never drank more than half of the milk. But the next morning, My cup was always empty. Why? Last night before I went to sleep, I drank half of my milk as usual. In a few minutes, I was asleep. A few hours later, I woke up. What made me wake up? The moon shone brightly, so it wasn’t very dark in the room. Nothing was different, except for my window. It was open a little.’ oh, it’s the wind,’ I said.’ The wind blew my window open.’ After I closed the window, I went back to bed. But just before I went to sleep, the window began to open again, very slowly. What or who was it? Maybe a thief! I was very afraid. I am not very brave!

Then I saw something dark at the window. It jumped down to the floor. It walked quietly to the side of my bed. It stayed there for a few minutes. The nit crossed the room again and I saw its tail. I sat up quickly in bed and looked at my cup of milk, It was empty.

    The sound of music

The sound of music is a classical music drama. The song in the drama is sung by many people. We can say the song is a graceful poem. Let’s read it together.

The hills are alive with the sound of music,With songs they have sung for a thousand years. The hills fill my heart with the sound of music,My heart wants to sing every thing every song it hears. My heart wants to beatLike the wings of the birds that rise,From the lake to the trees. My heart wants to sigh like a chime that fliesFrom a church on a breezeTo laugh like a brook when it tripsAnd falls over stones on its way.To sing through the nightLike a lake who is learning to pray.I go to the hills when my heat is lonely.I know I will hear what I've heard before. My heart will be blessed with the sound of music,And I'll sing once more.

    Birth of Jesus

Once there was a man named Joseph and his wife named Mary. It is said that one night an angel came to them and told them they would have a special boy. The boy would save his people.

At that time ,everyone had to go back to their own hometown to be counted. Mary and Joseph had to travel before the baby was born. It was a long journey. They didn't arrive until very late one night. They looked for a place to stay, but they didn't find. At last, the owner of a house said they could stay in the barn. That night Mary gave birth to this special boy.

Soon after the baby was born, angels appeared to some shepherds in a field near the town. Angels told them a special boy was born, he would save them. The boy was named Jesus by his father, but people called him Jesus Christ because Christ means to save. Years later, people still celebrate Jesus' birthday. They call it Christmas, which comes from the name Christ.

    Christmas stocking

There was a kindly nobleman whose wife had died of an illness leaving the nobleman and his three daughters in despair. After losing all his money in useless and bad inventions the family had to move into a peasant's cottage, where the daughters did their own cooking, sewing and cleaning.

When it came time for the daughters to marry, the father became even more depressed as his daughters could not marry without dowries, money and property given to the new husband's family.

One night after the daughters had washed out their clothing they hung their stockings over the fireplace to dry. That night Saint Nicholas, knowing the despair of the father, stopped by the nobleman's house. Looking in the window Saint Nicholas saw that the family had gone to bed. He also noticed the daughters’ stockings. Inspiration struck Saint Nicholas and he took three small bags of gold from his pouch and threw them one by one down the chimney and they landed in the stockings.

The next morning when the daughters awoke they found their stockings contained enough gold for them to get married. The nobleman was able to see his three daughters marry and he lived a long and happy life.

Children all over the world continue the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings. In some countries children have similar customs, in France the children place their shoes by the fireplace, a tradition dating back to when children wore wooden peasant shoes.

In Holland the children fill their shoes with hay and a carrot for the horse of Sintirklass. In Hungary children shine their shoes before putting them near the door or a window sill.

Italian children leave their shoes out the night before Epiphany, January 5, for La Befana the good witch. And in Puerto Rico children put greens and flowers in small boxes and place them under their beds for the camels of the Three Kings.

    Labor Day

Labor Day legal holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Canal Zone, and the Virgin Islands. The celebration of Labor Day, in honor of the working class, was initiated in the U.S. in 1882 by the Knights of Labor, who held a large parade in New York City. In 1884 the group held a parade on the first Monday of September and passed a resolution to hold all future parades on that day and to designate the day as Labor Day. Subsequently other worker organizations began to agitate for state legislatures to declare the day a legal holiday. In March 1887, the first law to that effect was passed in Colorado, followed by New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. In 1894 the U.S. Congress made the day a legal holiday. Parades, and speeches by labor leaders and political figures, mark Labor Day celebrations.

Labor Day is celebrated in Canada on the first Monday in September. The first parades and rallies to honor workers were held in 1872 in Ottawa and Toronto, and the September date was officially recognized by Parliament in 1894.
